Better than Lode Runner

Granny in Paradise screenshot on mobile phone
Granny in Paradise is a conversion of PC casual game with the same title developed by Sandlot Games. Scottish mobile games developer Tag Games gained the rights for the mobile version of this game. Tag Games is a young developer company which has only four games in its portfolio. I wrote a review of their “Rock'n'Roll” mobile game and I was surprised by high quality of this game and I also wrote in my review that I look forward to next game from Tag Games. What do you think, were my expectations accomplished?

Granny in Paradise is a mixture of platform, casual and arcade game. It is a remake of the old concept of Lode Runner, which was also converted to mobile phones. I made also the review of the mobile version of Lode Runner and I have to say that mobile version of Granny in Paradise is better than mobile version of Lode Runner. I will compare these two games later in my review.

And what is the principle of Granny in Paradise? You play for Super Granny. While on a well deserved vacation, Super Granny's kitties are abducted. Run, dig, climb, swing, float and tumble as you rescue Granny's missing cats and outwit the minions of the nefarious Dr Meow. You have to find and rescue all missing cats and take them to the marked gate. If you collect all kitties, the special big flower will appear in the certain part of the level and you have to find this flower and enter into it. Then the level is completed. It looks simple, but you have also the enemies – they are called Tikimans and if they touch you, you loose your life. You can defend against them by digging a hole, Tikiman then falls into it. But he appears after couple of seconds in another part of the level and finds his way to you again. The saving system is very good, if you loose all your lifes, you will start from the last unfinished level again with full number of your lifes. The game provides various bonuses. You can walk over the selected places and plant flowers, if you plant certain number of flowers, you gain an extra life. Another bonuses are: watering can (you can water small plants which will grow and you can climb on them and get to the distant places of the level), bomb (you can blow obstacles and find lost cats), umbrella (you can use it as a parachute and get to the distant places), special weapon (you can stun the enemies) or a key (you can open secret doors). Very good bonuses are special plants: if you water them with the watering can, extraordinary flower will appear. If the enemy walks over it, the flower will eat him and he will bother you no more.

The graphics of the game is very nice. It looks photorealistic; I enjoyed especially the first location on the sunny beach. The movements of the Granny are also detailed programmed. The game consists of 35 levels divided in 3 locations. The graphics of the game made very good impression on me; it is one of the best graphics in the field of platform games. If I compare it with the graphics of very similar game Lode Runner I have to say that Granny in Paradise has better graphics.

The music in the game is poor. You will hear only three different melodies during the game. Each location has its own melody. The first melody is nice but next two melodies are boring. The music of Granny in Paradise is on the same level with the quality of the music of Lode Runner. You will hear no sound effects in the game.

The players are motivated enough to continue playing the game and get to its end. You will discover always new bonuses and possibilities in the game. It will not begin to bore you. I think that motivation in playing of Lode Runner was worse. In Lode Runner were all the levels available from the beginning, in Granny in Paradise you have to unlock them. The Gameplay of Granny in Paradise is also better. You have various bonuses in Granny in Paradise, you can't continue in the level without using them. It seems that Lode Runner is more interesting game, because it has more levels (80). But these levels are very similar, without essential differences between them. In Granny in Paradise are only 35 levels, but it is fun to play them.

Granny in Paradise is very good casual platform arcade game. It is only a copy of the Lode Runner concept, but I have to say that it is much better than the original. The main positive of the game is its gorgeous graphics together with very good gameplay. The sounds of the game could be better but it balances it with the motivation of the player, you would like to continue playing the game till its last level. The conversion of this PC casual hit is a success and I recommend it to all players. Especially if you are a Lode Runner fun and you were disappointed with mobile version of the PC classic, Granny in Paradise is a good choice for you. I will finish my review of Granny in Paradise similar as the review of the previous game from Tag Games: I look forward to next game of this developer; I hope that they will continue in developing first-quality elite games.
